October 31 Minutes

Ok, so after settling all 60 people down we got shirts distributed and explained the importance of PAINTING FACES COMPLETELY WHITE! Everybody needs to remember WHY we are doing this and that we are not doing this to draw attention to one another but to respect, honor, and REMEMBER the 71 CO teens killed last year in car accidents.

If you are to paint your face, show up at the Leadership Office in the cafeteria at 6:45 Friday morning and there everybody will be painting their faces white.

Afterwards the Education Committee and I met with Sue and Mr Holman and Kolasa to talk about the raffle that took place today in the cafeteria and the exact process for tomorrow's Remember Day...

This weekend I will be meeting with the committee for Encouragement Week to begin planning and start getting things rolling on that.

Next Meeting: Wednesday November 6, 2:30 S9

If youhave questions contact me. Thanks.

Ok guys, great first meeting! I was extremely happy with the turnout and I even have had people approaching me all night in person, in text, in email asking if they can still be apart of it. To those of you who are helping with this, thank you. Thank you for taking the time out of your hectic schedule to work as a unified team and attempt to save lives in an indirect way. This is great work.

Before I re-cap today's meeting I wanted to inform everybody that I have the results back from the observation performed by the MHSC coordinators on Monday and we completeed with an 87% seatbelt rate among AHS Students. Considering the state average is 72.9%, we did phenomenal. As a goal, remember that somewhere from 95-99% should be a goal all of us must fully strive for. Lets do it guys.

Alright, so here are the heads of the three committees we have created...

Education Campaign
  • "Increase awareness and education to students about teen motor vehicle crashes."
  • 3 activities
  • 10/22-11/2
  • Committee Heads: Lauren Schrock, Megan O'Donnell, Ashlyn Booth

Activities:

  1. School Announcements: We will be covering this designated area with a few different areas. Firstly, we will be playing a large variety of videos. We will be asking teachers to play videos in class (2-4minutes) and we will also be screening all of our videos on the cafeteria screen during both lunches (M, W, F). Starting tomorrow we will be airing announcements over the PA System during third hour. These announcements will be stating factual information regarding seat belt use. But this is the catch. On Thursday, Nov. 1, students during lunches will be quizzed to see how well they actually retained the facts. Students who have retained these facts accurately will receive the opportunity to enter a raffle and possibly win an itunes card which will be provided by the MHSC committee when requested by us.
  2. Factual Flyers: The committee will be creating flyers to post around school possibly by Friday. These flyers will contain factual information on seatbelt safety to educate others on how important seatbelts really are.
  3. Student Survey: I have created a five question survey that will be distributed to students this week at the Alive at 25 meeting for Juniors and will also be distributed to the rest of the Student Body next week. This information will be compiled and data will be computed so we can re-administer this survey at the conclusion of week 6 so we can compare and survey our own success.
  4. Remember Day: Now I will have to get this activity approved by the committee but I am very confident that they will love it. On Friday, November 2 to conclude the Education Unit with a bang will be our Remember Day. This day, we will have 71 students (equally varied through each grade level, number corresponds to CO deaths in 2006 for teens) dressed in all black and with faces painted white who will go through the school day silent as a remembrance of those CO teens killed in motor vehicle accidents last year. This will have an extremely personal impact on students and should be the strongest activity these two weeks. If you have more questions email me or contact one of the committee heads.

Encouragement

  • "To encourage students to wear their seatbelt every time they are in a car."
  • 11/5-11/16
  • Committee Heads: Natalie Margason, Jordan Lombardi, Emma Lawler, Cecily Johnson

We will be discussing this next meeting (See below for details)

Enforcement

  • "To increase knowledge of teen driving and seatbelt laws and their consequences."
  • 11/19-11/30
  • Committee Heads: Annika Erickson-Pearson, Alee Abt, Stephanie Curtis, Audre Damico

We will be discussing this in two weeks (See below for details)

Also, Natalie Margason will be heading up photoraphy so we can document the activities and meetings with visual artifacts. If you are interested in helping contact her, you can get everybody's email through me if you were not at the first meeting...

Next Meeting: Wednesday October 31, 2:30sharp in S-9!!!

Following Meeting: Wednesday November 7 2:30 in S-9

Also, start thinking of ideas for a party...If we win (between us and the five other participating high schools) the MHSC committee will be hosting a party for us of our choice...BUT DO NOT GET FOCUSED ON THIS DURING YOUR EFFORTS! REMEMBER WHY WE ARE DOING THIS AND I GUARANTEE WE WILL IMPROVE OUR SUCCESS! If I have anything to add I will probably just comment on this post because they will be small adjustments. Make sure to read the comments on these posts as well.

If you have any questions post here or email me, brooksk23@msn.com. Get others involved!

Thank you everybody,

Brooks Kanski

Introduction from Chairman

Welcome to Arapahoe High School's Mile High Seatbelt Challenge blogspot. Here you will be able to stay up to date with what Arapahoe High School's Remember Club is doing to raise safety awareness behind the wheel of a vehicle (specifically in seatbelt use) in the South Metro area of Denver, CO and what we are doing to compete in the Mile High Seatbelt Challenge 2007 hosted by Mile High RETAC.
Today, representatives from RETAC hosted a kickoff breakfast with Student Council and Remember Club to introduce the challenge. Over the next seven weeks we will be competing with five other schools to see who can complete with the highest seatbelt ratings as observed by RETAC representatives.
So please interact and check out this blog as it will be used for communicative methods of the Remember Club in collaborating on this project as it will also be used as an informative method to educate others on seatbelt awareness and what this challenge is all about.
Feel free to post questions here on the blog or email me, Brooks Kanski, at brooksk23@msn.com.
